On January 29th, 2012, Lincoln Curtis Bartholomaus, son of Anthony and Ashley Bartholomaus, was presented to the congregation for baptism.  His 4 year-old brother, Nolan, also assisted Pastor Terry Morse and witnessed the event. Congratulations to the happy family, parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

In 2011, ten (10)Baptisms were celebrated by the congregation. Nine were for infants and one was for an adult.  We welcome and embrace these families with our nurture, love and prayers. CONGRATULATIONS.

Christmas Carolers Brought Sounds of the Season to Joe and Christie Wessels this week. The Wessels will celebrate their 70th Wedding Anniversary on January 2nd, 2012

70th Wedding Anniversary celebrations have started early for Joe and Christie Wessels.

Carolers from First Presbyterian Church brought the sounds of Christmas to families this week.  Here they are posing for a photo at Joe and Christie Wessels home after delivering their vocal gift.

The Wessels (Joe and Christie) will celebrate their 70th Wedding anniversary on Monday Jan 2nd. As the story is told, they planned to be married on New Years Day 1942, but a Minnesota snow storm (remember those?) changed their plans.  So the next day the horses were hitched up to clear a path.  The young couple were married on Jan 2nd at the Bethel Reformed Church near Ellsworth.

Rev. Dan Voigt, newly ordained, gowned, and blessed for ministry, offers the parting word of Benediction to the congregation.

On Sunday, August 28th, a Service of Ordination was conducted for Daniel A. Voigt at the First Presbyterian Church of Luverne, Minnesota.  The service was led by Connie Seltz, Moderator of the Presbytery of Minnesota Valleys. Judy Crain, Elder of the United Trinity Church of Hamburg, Iowa, where Dan will minister, gave the Call to Worship.

Dan grew up in this congregation, and his proud parents, Phil and Louella Voigt, both Elders in the congregation, offered the Prayer of illumination and the Scripture Readings.

The Sermon was given by the Rev. Dr. Ted Faszer, uncle of the candidate.  He shared that Dan’s ordination marks the third generation of ministers since his Grandfather Isadore Faszer’s ordination.  Uncle Ted also paraphrased the 2 Timothy 1:1-12 passage replacing “my beloved son” with “my beloved nephew.”

Rev. Dr. Terry Morse, pastor of the the home congregation, offered the Charge to the Candidate.  He encouraged Dan to challenge the congregation to ‘live by faith’ rather than selling a ‘watered down gospel’ of  “church-lite” (20% less commitments, 8minute sermons, 40 minute worship, and 8 Commandments). Lifting up the words of the Shema Yisrael, he challenged Dan to teach God’s People to be “little-Christs” by being a “little-Christ’ himself.

Blair Voigt, wife of the candidate, sang, “To The Only God” as the Offertory accompanying herself on the piano.  

The United Trinity Church is Dan Voigt’s first call.  He will serve as solo pastor and be received into the Missouri River Valley Presbytery.

By October 2011, the Sidewalk Petunia has had over 40 flowers on it. As frost comes, his strong volunteer will end its decorative stay as a front-door greeter to guests at our home.

The Sunday Worship and service of open Holy Communion was sponsored by the First Presbyterian, Methodist, and Episcopal congregations of Luverne, MN.

Pastors Terry Morse, Donn Rakow, Emily Lodine, and dozens of community volunteers mde the service the success it was.

Thanks as well to our own Deb Vander Kooi, chair of First Presbyterian Church worship committee, for her initiative in planning for this event.
